Greed metal alchemist brotherhood face2/28/2024 ![]() So it’s not like you can prove a homonculus is male or female through chromosomes. If someone from the 1800s designed two male character to have a romantic and sexual relationship with each other would they not be gay? Just because these characters weren’t designed with our modern understanding of sexuality doesn’t mean those characters aren’t gay.įurthermore, homonculi don’t have a sex since they can’t reproduce (even Wrath who was originally human can’t reproduce with his human wife since we know Pride is adopted). Did Arakawa think of the term non-binary when designing Envy? Probably not but I don’t see why that matters. This is honestly reason enough to see Envy as non-binary as they don’t conform to either gender norms. I think Arakawa deliberately designed and wrote Envy to be androgynous and with no gender due to them being a shapeshifter and not human. I’ve tried finding instances of it and I’ve found them for other characters like Mustang but not Envy. I have yet to see an instance of Envy being referred to as male or using masculine pronouns in Japanese. You say he’s referred to as male, but that’s just the English translation. I think this is down to the fact that Sloth is meant to represent the thoughts at the back of our mind that never leave us (the tunnel) and that's why the only happiness can be found at death. In brotherhood it's portrayed masculine but I'd say is the most obviously non human looking in physical depiction. That's why I think sloth in 03 felt so alien to me, it didn't fit the expectation of what sloth feels like. Men have been fighting to acquire since the dawn of civilisation and the people in control of physical things tend to be an untouchable member of society (even today). Greed being a shield against attack is a masculine trait that can be traced back through history. He's more like everything a man should be without the faults and despite being a homunculus he usually acts with grace. He portrays strong masculinity but doesn't seem like a man to me. I actually find that specifically the fuhrer seems to be very neutral when it comes to gender. ![]() ![]() ![]() They're all symbolic of their trait but defined more by femininity and masculinity rather than specific genders (in my mind). While we can lust after anything a beautiful woman is the most iconic and relatable image of lust, a child is a symbol of pride, wrath is a square jawed war lord, gluttony speaks for itself and so on. It feels to me that it's to reiterate that envy can be found in anybody with reference to any 'thing'. Envy can portray anything physically and I don't think that's a coincidence. I think the traits of the homunculi are directly related to their sins. I've always just seen Envy as being generally undefined gender and otherwise.
